"Shove over, Aunt Leelee. Mom's all spread out on her side."
I snorted. "She says I'm the bed hog."
"She's never had to sleep with herself."
"Will you two hush," Mae said with a grumble. "Why are you in here?"
Harriet snuggled up to my back, which I loved. She was my sister's daughter, but it meant everything that she felt comfortable enough with me to be so snuggly, even at her age. "Bertha is sawing a whole forest in there. I don't think I can sleep with her anymore. One of you has to do it."
I reached over and tapped my phone. Three in the morning. "Go to sleep," I whispered. "We'll figure it out tomorrow."
"Okay." Her voice was thick with sleep as she turned over.
What felt like twenty minutes later, Bertha's voice jerked me out of a nice dream about riding a horse, an activity I'd never once done in real life. "What's going on in here? A slumber party?"
I sat up, disoriented.
Harriet jerked awake and nearly fell out of the bed. "What's going on?"
"I'm going home." Bertha's voice was final.
"You're not going home." My voice was equally as final. "You know that."
"I'm not going to be a burden to you all anymore."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Bertha, you're not a burden. Yes, we're a little cramped. That's very much different from being a burden."
She threw up her hands and tapped her foot as Mae rolled over and glared at us. "Just stay at Susan's. You don't seem to mind the heat, do you?"
Bertha waved her hand. "I'm a firebug. Cold bothers me much more than heat."
Hey, there. Mae was on to something. "Well, it won't be cold here for another couple of months. By then we surely will have this resolved and the renovations done, and either you back home or proper heat installed in the house here."
Harriet rolled off the bed. "If you're all up and going to be up, I'm closing myself up in the bunk room to sleep." At the door, she stopped and glared back at all of us. "I need my rest."
We couldn't help but giggle at the young woman as she escaped us. "She's always needed her rest," Mae said as she sat up. "She slept like a rock as an infant, even. I used to get freaked out by how much she slept."
Burrowing down in the blankets, I moved my feet so Bertha could sit. "I remember that. We used to sit and stare at her in her little bassinet." She'd been such a sweet child.
"Susan's..." Bertha said in a musing town. "All right then. I suppose as long as I can be there while they renovate, I'll make it work."
I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. "Thank you, Bertha."
"Just don't get used to it," she said with a grumble as she stood. "I'm not going to be a burden to you all forever. I'll go home sooner or later."
With that, she left the room, leaving Mae and me to stare at each other.
